Backyard Birds and their antics, color, and song provide far greater entertainment than TV and movies andlie just outside our windows. We are amazed at the darting Hummingbirds as they defend their territory. The majestic Cardinals and arrogant Blue Jays add dazzling color and sharp chirping songs. Colorful Finches and Wrens play around We especially enjoy the soft cooing of the Doves in the morning. Attracting these and many other varieties of back yard birds is easy. There is only one requirement : "If you feed them - they will come"
Generally, backyard birds fall into three feeding categories. These are ground feeders, platform feeders, and tube feeders. Each feeding category will attract a different type of bird. Different types of food will do the same. The birds may seem to be devouring the latest piles of seeds you put before them, but in reality, they are eating what they want and kicking the rest from the feeder! Ground feeders birds tend to prefer millet and sunflower seeds. Doves, Thrushes, Black birds, Jays, and Mockingbirds as well as Chickadees, Sparrows, and Wrens can be drawn to ground feeders. Platform feeders such as Jays, Cardinals and There you go. It isn't hard. Just start feeding, provide water, and soon your back yard will become one filled with morning and afternoons being serenaded by our feathered friends. Birds require three things in order to become regulars in your yard - food, water, and shelter. If you have trees and shrubs all you need is the food and water. But beware, birds can be finicky eaters. It may be the Cardinal you desire, but you may attract only Crows and pigeons! It isn't difficult, but a little planning will assure you of a back yard full of color, song, and dance all year.
many others prefer sunflowers and peanuts. The platform feeder becomes a ground feeder as well as these birds knock many of the smaller seeds to the ground. Tube feeders will attract the smaller perching birds such as Wrens, Chickadees, and Finches. The colorful Finches also enjoy thistle feeders. A tasty treat enjoyed by our Mockingbirds are orange and apple slices. While both Cardinals and Jays will eat peanuts, the Jays delite us in opening their own. They will smack the peanut against a hard object until it cracks. Robins, Bluebirds, and Thrushes tend to desire live food such as worms, insects, and an especially tasty treat for Bluebirds are mealworms.
