As much as we enjoy watching and attracting backyard birds to our bird feeders and bird houses, there are many wonderful birds to find and watch that we cannot bring to our own yards. Fortunately for the birding community, many states, local governments, and other organizations have developed birding trails for the bird watchers. These can be anything from easily accessible to very arduous adventures. Most are designed for the weekend bird watching population which numbers more than 40 million strong. These trails provide us an opportunity to see rare birds which are much wilder than what we are accustomed to in our back yards. Imagine the various wetland birds we can encounter. Flamingos, herons, swans, pelicans, ducks, and geese to name a few. The birds of prey such as hawks and eagles. The owls and even a road runner or two. All these can be found just off the beaten paths along the many birding trails of this country. Below, we have listed the state birding trails we are aware of. There are many more smaller trails that we have not listed. For those states left blank, if you know of a birding trail in these states, let us know so we may add them to the list. Now get out there or in your backyard and enjoy the wonderful world of birding.
